Lot No: 17, Quay Island, Bunratty, County Clare, Ireland
Available - £230,000
Quay Island is 23.5 acres of land in the Shannon Estuary. It is set amongst the back drop of some of the most beautiful country scenery that is to be found anywhere in Ireland. It is just minutes away from the main jetty of Bunratty Castle, a major tourist stop in the beautiful County of Clare. Shannon airport is half a mile upstream and this also has it’s own major harbour jetty. Current developments in use of the historical Shannon River means that cruise ships will be allowed to use the new shipping lanes in future.
There is a fresh water sluesh in the middle of the land that can comfortably supply the Island’s own fresh water needs. Old ruins of a period house are still standing in the small forested area that occupies the central interior of the Island. The property has potential for renovation and extension, subject to all the necessary consents being obtainable.
There is also a 40 foot high lighthouse towards the top end of the Island that serves to warn the local shipping that they are entering shallow waters and must remain centre stream – this is quite a sight to behold during daytime or nightime observations.
The Island itself is steeped in history, having served as a small port drop off point for cargo being brought back from the West Indies in the 1800s. The old house on the Island also served as a Base Barracks during the first world war. It has eight of it’s own natural perches, with one previously serving as a main landing jetty, as this particular one borders the deep waters of the Shannon River.
A full size landing jetty could easily be re-erected here for larger boats or cruisers to berth alongside the Island.
The Island can be reached at low tide from the mainland by foot. At high tide, a boat or dingy takes minutes to reach the main Bunratty jetty or even less if going from the Island’s most westerly point to the farm land immediately opposite on the mainland. The location of the Island is very close to the very picturesque village of Bunratty, which has two very famous and historical landmarks. The first is Bunratty Castle, which dates back to the Kings of Munster and now serves as a very popular tourist attraction. There is also one of the oldest pubs in Ireland called Durty Knelly’s, which is built into the
side of the river bank. The rest of Bunratty is a combination of diverse eateries, bars, hotels and guest houses, all surrounded by the stunning views of the Gallus Mountains in County Clare.
