What Is Life Like In Bearsted?

Bearsted is a picturesque Kent village, located just 2 miles from Maidstone. Much of village life centres around the quintessential green, with beautiful listed buildings and two pubs framing the idyllic village and epitomising the country lifestyle it offers. The village attracts commuting families and first-time buyers, with convenient rail connections to London (taking less than 70 minutes) and a close-knit community that is perfect for bringing up children.

Not surprisingly, roads close to the Village Green and those within walking distance of the station and fantastic local schools are amongst the most sought-after.

History Of Bearsted

Just one of Bearsted’s 59 listed buildings is the Holy Cross Church, which is Grade I listed and is believed to be on the site of where an ancient festival celebrating Holy Cross Day, was held in 335 AD! The church’s arch is partially Saxon, with later work added.

Bergestede, as it was known, is Anglo-Saxon for a place on the hill or barrow. Its village green was named the Hothe and used as shared land during the 15th and 17th centuries. It was during this time that the buildings surrounding the green which most add the traditional English character to the village, were built. They have delighted residents and visitors ever since.

Just a few of the many listed buildings within the village include: The Limes, The Old Bakery, Old Manor Cottages and The Old Manor House, all of which date back to the 15th century.
