A short history of New Romney

New Romney once had its own harbour and was one of the Cinque Ports established to defend the south coast from invasion in the Middle Ages. A series of devastating storms in the late 13th century filled almost the entire town with shingle and debris, and its harbour never recovered. Today you can still see many historic buildings around the town, including a Norman church at the site where the harbour's edge once stood.
